Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has begun enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule officially takes effect as of early November, according to an internal announcement shared with employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the large-scale transaction to go through.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. However, the wording has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Additionally, since the limit is tied to individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the game's rising popularity.

Certain buyers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, while others search for valuable pulls that can fetch sky-high values. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars in online marketplaces.

Upcoming Releases

This policy change coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the persistent interest and likely scalper target.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce bulk purchases and improve availability for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
