The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
