Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus. On the Incredible Viewer Reception One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that. “It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show. “We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.” “Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes. The Big Question: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus? So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of. “There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.” Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort. “I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.” Of course, one could always use the legendary finales? “My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile. Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
