Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars

He contested justice and the law prevailed.

A couple of months after receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Incarceration

The adjudicated instigator – who had been under residential detention in his mansion while a number of court processes and petitions play out – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, amidst mounting speculation that he will be moved to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.

Historical Remarks on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the conservative former paratrooper exhibited little sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we provide these scoundrels a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That's my opinion.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to finish behind bars, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Speculation

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an obvious bid to dissuade the judiciary from banishing him there.

Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, claimed he predicted the elderly politician to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He will not be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells accommodating forty inmates: “It's virtually one square meter per inmate.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible cuisine,” continued the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

The senator isn't the only voice speaking out prior to the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.

Writing in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“It represents an injustice that gnaws the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Mixed Popular Opinion

It is possibly correct due to the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his expected imprisonment has also warmed the spirits of millions other people who feel he deserves to be jailed for planning to block the elected leader from becoming president – and additionally plotting to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a politician for the sitting leader's political party, commented: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to obtain proper handling – but dignified care while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the tough handling of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has consistently claimed that civil liberties were not for offenders – decided to tour a penitentiary to discover what circumstances are truly like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, insulting treatment”.

Potential Prison Environment

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently contains about fourteen thousand detainees, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a adjacent jail for law enforcement and other “unique” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are much more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although still a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the stunning official residence, around 12 miles away.

As per sources, the cell Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 square meter bathroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre veranda. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a TV and even a small fridge in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” information suggested.

Partisan Responses

Senator Lucas criticized the rumoured idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his future in the {
