It: Welcome to Derry Premieres Episode Two Early on HBO Max

Excitement is building for the horror series the Derry series, which is garnering praise and incorporating elements from other Stephen King works. Now, HBO has revealed that episode two will arrive early, timed perfectly for Halloween.

Early Release Details

Kicking off on Halloween night at midnight PT, episode two of It: Welcome to Derry will launch on the streaming service, prior to its Sunday HBO premiere. Subsequent episodes of the series run will continue to air on Sunday nights on both HBO and its streaming arm, culminating in the final episode on Sunday, December 14.

Series Overview

Based in Stephen King’s It universe, the new series is inspired by the original story while building upon the universe realized by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the two It films. It Chapter One focused on young characters battling supernatural evils, so it’s fitting that the series follows in those footsteps. Nevertheless, the premiere episode of HBO’s Welcome to Derry shows it intended to escalate the fear, delivering even more intense scares than Muschietti’s films and creating a brutal tone for what's to come.

Premise and Ideas

Taking place in the 1960s, this show features a new generation of parents and youngsters inhabiting a seemingly idyllic town concealing a dark secret. Derry follows a brutal, periodic loop—one marked by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a monstrous presence reappears every 27 years. Even though the series might seem like it skews too close to the films initially, what differentiates the HBO Max series is its two-sided viewpoint—narrated via the perspectives of kids and grown-ups simultaneously. Younger characters are highly exposed to the entity's fear, but older characters don't escape facing their personal demons born from the town's ingrained prejudice and covert otherworldly powers.

Episode 2 debuts on the 31st of October at 3 a.m. EST.
