Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
