The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the video.

Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.

The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.

Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
