Cameron Norrie secured the biggest victory of his professional journey by rallying from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this triumph represents Norrie's maiden victory over a sitting world number one.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from health issues last year, I fell in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my game in the latter part of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest success of my tennis journey, my first win over the world No 1 and probably the most in-form athlete in the tennis scene right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which was the top run of performances in the Spanish star's early professional path.

The top seed looked to be progressing easily to a win early on as he cruised in the initial stanza. Nevertheless, the British contender slowly fought his way back into the game by serving with greater precision and dragging the Spaniard into extended, grueling exchanges. His persistent consistency and reliability gradually made an impact.

During large parts of the contest, Alcaraz served well but he struggled badly to get his timing right with his rally strokes. The rising talent appeared particularly uncomfortable executing his forehand, which has been the best shot in the world for much of this season, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 mistakes. Opposing him, the British player presented his opponent minimal unforced errors, keeping up his reliability, fitness and power throughout while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to advance into the court and attack well.
